Getting Up Close and Personal with the Hairy Locals at Colready Highlands!

Colready Highlands

If you’re looking for a fun day out in Northamptonshire, somewhere a little different, and an opportunity to meet some rather hairy celebrities, then Colready Highlands near Brackley should definitely be on your list!

There are plenty of things you can do in Northamptonshire, but how many involve getting up close and personal with a Highland cow, feeding it apples and discovering that, quite frankly, its hairstyle is probably better than yours?

Welcome to Colready Highlands, a family-run farm at Farthinghoe, just outside Brackley, where visitors get the opportunity to meet a rather special herd of beautiful Highland cattle.

And believe me, these aren’t your ordinary farm animals. With their magnificent coats, impressive horns and rather fabulous fringes, they look as though they’ve just walked off the set of a shampoo advert.

The experience is all about getting to know these gentle giants. Visitors have the opportunity to meet the cattle, learn about the Highland breed, discover more about their individual personalities and, perhaps most importantly, hand-feed them some delicious apples.

Although I suspect the cows are less interested in making new friends and more interested in establishing whether you’ve brought enough snacks!

There’s something rather wonderful about spending time with these animals. They’re incredibly photogenic, although getting them to look directly at the camera is another matter entirely. You can take as many photographs as you like, but don’t expect them to follow your instructions. They’re Highland cows, not professional models!

The team at Colready Highlands are passionate about their animals and are keen to share their knowledge with visitors. You’ll learn about the breed, how the cattle are cared for and what makes each animal unique.

And it’s not just about the traditional cattle experience. Colready Highlands has developed a range of activities, including afternoon tea with the Highlands, breakfast experiences, tea and scones, cheese and wine experiences and even Sip and Paint sessions.

Yes, you really can enjoy a little artistic creativity while spending time with Highland cows. Although I wouldn’t recommend asking one of them to critique your painting. Their artistic standards are probably quite high!

It’s also worth highlighting that Colready Highlands offers dedicated SEN-friendly experiences, providing smaller groups, a quieter environment and a more relaxed pace for visitors who may benefit from additional support.

What makes Colready Highlands particularly special is that it’s a family-run operation with a genuine passion for its animals. The cattle are cared for throughout their natural lives, with their welfare at the heart of the experience.

Whether you’re looking for something to do with the family, a different kind of date, a get-together with friends or simply an excuse to spend an hour or two away from everyday life, this is a rather delightful way to spend your time.

Our verdict? Forget expensive entertainment, complicated itineraries and another afternoon sitting in front of the television. Sometimes all you need is a field, a few apples and a very fluffy cow!

Colready Highlands is a wonderful example of the unique experiences available right here in Northamptonshire. It’s fun, educational, entertaining and guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

Just remember to take your camera, wear suitable footwear and be prepared to fall in love with a cow!

Although, if you do come home wanting to adopt one, you might need to have a conversation with the neighbours first!
