Few places capture the golden age of Britain’s waterways quite like Stoke Bruerne. Nestled on the banks of the Grand Union Canal in the heart of Northamptonshire, this picturesque canal village is the perfect destination for anyone interested in history, engineering, wildlife or simply enjoying a relaxing day out.
At the heart of the village is the Canal Museum, housed in a beautifully restored Grade II listed corn mill. Free to visit, the museum tells the fascinating story of Britain’s inland waterways through interactive displays, historic artefacts and engaging exhibits. Visitors can learn about the lives of the boatmen, families and lock keepers who once kept the country’s canals moving, while colourful displays of traditional canal art bring this rich heritage to life. Outside, the historic narrowboat Sculptor provides another glimpse into the working life of the waterways.

After exploring the museum, take time to enjoy the welcoming canalside café. Serving freshly prepared sandwiches, homemade cakes, hot drinks and light lunches, it’s the ideal place to relax while watching narrowboats pass through the locks. During warmer months, outdoor seating allows visitors to soak up the peaceful atmosphere beside the water.
No visit to Stoke Bruerne would be complete without walking along the towpath to the southern entrance of the remarkable Blisworth Tunnel. Stretching for over 3,000 yards (2.8 kilometres), it is one of the longest navigable canal tunnels in Britain and the longest wide, freely navigable canal tunnel in Europe. Opened in 1805, the tunnel transformed transport across the Midlands, allowing goods to pass beneath the Northamptonshire countryside instead of over it. Before powered boats, vessels were pushed through the tunnel by “leggers” – men who lay on their backs and walked along the tunnel walls with their feet.
Whether you’re discovering canal history, enjoying lunch beside the locks, watching colourful narrowboats navigate the waterway or taking a leisurely stroll to one of Britain’s greatest canal engineering achievements, Stoke Bruerne offers a memorable day out for visitors of all ages.
